In Serpent Queen, I reimagine Medusa not as a monster, but as a force—unrelenting, powerful, and impossible to ignore. Her piercing green eyes, hypnotic and unwavering, tell a story deeper than the myths that have vilified her. She dares us to look beyond legend and into the soul of a woman who has endured betrayal, transformation, and rebirth.
Her hair, a living crown of serpents, coils and twists with a will of its own, symbolizing both her curse and her power—danger and protection entwined. Their restless movement contrasts with the stillness of her expression, emphasizing her duality: feared yet revered, wounded yet unbroken.
A wash of deep greens and muted shadows shrouds the background, evoking an air of mystery, as if she emerges from a forgotten realm—an echo of the past and of untold truths. The fluidity of watercolour lends itself to her ethereal presence, the soft bleeding of pigment mirroring the way her story has shifted and changed through time, never quite settling.
Serpent Queen is an invitation to reconsider the narratives imposed upon powerful women. It is a reclamation of identity, a challenge to those who would look away, and a testament to the beauty and strength that persist even in the face of darkness.
